About the Opportunity

Victoria Daly Regional Council is now looking for a full-time Workplace Health & Safety Manager to join their team in Katherine, NT.

This exciting hands-on role is responsible for ensuring safe workplace practices across all areas of the organisation. This includes responsibility for drug and alcohol testing, annual stocktaking, and establishment and maintenance of approved management safety systems to ensure the council's compliance and integrity is maintained. 

This is a varied role across a number of different areas of the local council. No two days will be the same, and there will always be new challenges and opportunities. This role will see you travelling around parts of rural NT that many never get the chance to experience, liaising with council staff and contractors to ensure council compliance with Northern Territory Work Health Legislation.

Core duties:

  • Develop, implement, and manage the Health & Safety processes and procedures in all Council's workplaces;
  • Liaise with all council staff to ensure WHS is maintained by all staff, and that managers are aware of their responsibilities;
  • Establish and maintain relationships with council staff to appropriately influence change in work practices; 
  • Undertake Council's drug and alcohol testing;
  • Report any problems or difficulties encountered in relation to staff, contractor performance, maintenance, or management, so that remedial action can be taken at a higher level;
  • Audit safety management plants submitted to the council to ensure compliance;
  • Undertake annual stock takes, ensuring asset registers are up-to-date and updated; and
  • Maintain a safe working environment and adhere to the Council Code of Conduct, policies, procedures, and Work Health & Safety regulations and ensure that all resources are effectively deployed.

About You

To be successful in this role you will need a relevant tertiary qualification in Occupational Health and Safety, as well as a high level of experience working in this field. This role is extremely varied and covers a number of functions such as civil construction, aged care, and sport and recreation. As such, experience in all the different business areas that this role will see you working across is not necessary, as extensive training and support will be provided to help you succeed.

The ability to identify, assess, and deliver viable solutions in a professional and fast manner will be critical in this role, as is the ability to work with Council management, staff and contractors to achieve positive outcomes. 

Sound knowledge of the principles and preparation of workplace health and safety compliant practices will help you hit the ground running in your new role. You will also need to be computer literate, and familiar with the Microsoft suite. Experience with any relevant software programs will also be beneficial. 

Additionally, it is important that you are a dynamic and forward-thinking leader, with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. You will be managing the health and safety of several locations across rural areas, so the ability to clearly communicate is essential.
