The organisation provides services in supported accommodation, supported employment and aged care for over 1200 people. New Horizons' non-profit commercial packaging service specialises in providing solutions for commercial clients while providing employment for people with a disability.

The organisation's head office is in North Ryde, however services are provided in the Sydney, Central Coast, Hunter, Mid North Coast, Blue Mountains and Northern Rivers regions. New Horizons is growing rapidly, with approximately 520 employees in NSW.

About the Opportunity

New Horizons has an exciting opportunity for a part time (3 days per week) Case Worker (Female) to join the Indigenous Family Support program based in Lismore. The role will deliver innovative and effective support for aboriginal women who have a diagnosis of mental illness living in the local community. This will be achieved through holistic and cultural appropriate support for both the individual and their families to encourage self determination and recovery.

By better linking Aboriginal people to community services, this program will support social inclusion and community cohesion and will assist in closing the gap in access to services between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians.

To be successful in the role, you will have a sound knowledge and understanding of the complexity of Aboriginal traditional culture and history, and the impact that culture including social and emotional issues and history has on the provision of health services to Aboriginal clients. You will either hold, or be willing to undertake tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Community Welfare, Community Development, Counselling or Mental Health. Additionally, an understanding of the Disability Service Standards and/or Mental Health Standards will be vital. In this position an applicant's race and gender is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by section 14 and section 31 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1997, as amended.

The role will cover the development of relationships with other service providers and promoting access and pathways to their services. In this pivotal 'hands on' role your ability to communicate effectively with vulnerable clients and client in crisis, to solve problems, to manage and organise your time efficiently and to build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with key individuals and stakeholders will be paramount to your success. You will need both the ability to work effectively in a small team, and the ability to work unsupervised and independently. Employment in this position is subject to a satisfactory Working With Children check and Criminal Record check.
