About the Kids in Focus program
Kids in Focus (KiF) is a new service funded by the Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA).
KiF aims to improve outcomes for children who reside in families where there is substance misuse. The service provides family focused interventions for families with substance misusing parents. This includes the identification and assessment of children at risk, responding to children at risk aged 0-8 using a resilience practice framework and supporting parents to parent more effectively and to cease substance misuse. KiF also aims to improve knowledge and linkages between family support, child protection and alcohol and other drug service providers.
About the Opportunity
The Lyndon Community has a fantastic opportunity for a dedicated full time Child & Family Worker (Case Manager) to join their Kids in Focus team in Orange.
Reporting to the Program Manager, Lyndon Outreach Unit, it will be your responsibility to provide assessment and case management for families dealing with substance misuse to elicit change and improve health, wellbeing and safety outcomes for children in their care. In addition, the Case Manager will be working as part of the Outreach Service to deliver training and local capacity building with family support and other service providers within Orange and to other towns in the central west region.
More specifically, you will be required to:
- Assess families including a review of strengths and needs and identification of risk factors;
- Provide Case Management to children and their families using a resilience practice framework to initiate change within families;
- Contribute to the ongoing discussions in case management by participating in case conferences, workers meetings and family reviews;
- Undertake supportive counselling with families or family members affected by AOD misuse;
- Use AOD treatment and harm minimisation methods to work intensively with parents to reduce their substance use and support them to parent more effectively;
- Home visit including building on and improving living skills within the family (e.g. home management, child management and communication among family members); and
- Make reports of child abuse or neglect to Community Services in line with agency policy.
The successful applicant will hold qualifications in Social Work, Psychology or similar, and have significant demonstrated experience in counselling, casework and assessments with families, specifically with families where there are high needs and issues of AOD use. You will have knowledge of and commitment to child development theory, AOD treatment and harm minimisation methods, as well as an understanding of the Child & Young Persons Act 1998 and mandatory requirements.
It is imperative that you possess knowledge of the current approaches in drug and alcohol treatment and a demonstrated understanding of the issues confronting people with substance abuse issues.
The ideal candidate will possess a high level of interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, general computer literacy and the ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
It is essential that you possess a current driver's licence.
